Robot'em Up

Pitch

In a fully cooperative beat'em up, discover a mysterious post-apocalyptic universe controlled by a paranoid AI. As 2 players, you share the same energy source to survive, and you must use it if you want to defeat your enemies. You need to pass it and dunk it with the right timing and the right positioning.

Gameplay Video

Origin

This project is my graduation project of my 5th year. It was more focused on a sport and street aspect at first, but at the end of the selection process (I was not on this project at first), we decided to move to a more robotic universe in the Far Future, notably influenced by NieR;Automata. We have a full year to make a 20 minutes prototype that should work as a Vertical Slice.

What I did

My work on Robot'em Up is very varied.

First I'm a Game Designer who helps decide the orientation of the gameplay, especially in the area of Puzzle Elements, Boss Design, plus the link between the narration and the gameplay.

Here's a doc describing the core loop of the fighting system.

I entirely designed, prototyped and built the Level Design of the puzzle part of the game. The puzzles in themselves are intended to be stress-free areas (in contrast to our arenas), to let players breathe; and I must find a good balance between low difficulty and boringness to have a good flow. The main goal is to unload the brain load.

I also designed and prototyped two iterations of what could be a Boss fight for our game.

I also design and prototype an exotic gameplay part in which the players need to avoid a bombardment.

I was also entrusted with the narrative part of the game.

We want "Robot'em Up" to be an immersive world and not only an arcade fast-paced combat game. I wrote a chronology of the universe, documents to establish the world-building, a scenario and the dialogs of the game. I am often in discussion with our Game Artists to ensure narrative consistency.
